3) D) Answer choice A is incorrect because it creates a sentence with two independent clauses joined only by a comma without a conjunction. B and C are incorrect for the same reason. D is correct because it turns the second part of the sentence into a phrase, which is correctly linked to the preceding independent clause by a comma.

Mathematics
1) A) The total decrease is equal to \$26,200 – \$17,500 = \$8,700. Now you can find the average yearly decrease over the four years: \$8,700/4 = \$2,175. Remember that “per” indicates division, so you know that to find the decrease per year, you must divide the total decrease by the number of years. See averages.

1) C) The passage is written in the third person (he, him, etc.) rather than the first person (I, me, etc.), so answer choices A and B can be eliminated. Answer choice D is tempting, since most of the passage is from Hosokawa’s perspective, but C is the better fit because, in the second to last paragraph and in lines 86-87, the narrator knows the thoughts of Kiyomi. Note that “omniscient” means “all-knowing.”

Science
2) G) The second paragraph indicates that the CS is the amount of lengthwise pressure a cylinder can withstand. Since G applies the pressure lengthwise, G is the correct answer. H and J don’t make sense because they indicate that negative pressure is being applied to the cylinder. Continue reading
